Research & Exploration

Rediscover Africa through the eyes of those who wander its vast and vibrant landscapes

Research and exploration are foundational to the African Geographic Society’s (AGS) mission of uncovering the hidden gems of Africa’s diverse landscapes and ecosystems. Our research initiatives aim to bridge knowledge gaps, discover new species, and provide data-driven insights that inform conservation efforts. AGS places a strong emphasis on local knowledge, partnering with indigenous communities and local experts to explore areas that are often overlooked or underexplored. This approach ensures that research is not only scientifically sound but also culturally relevant, empowering African voices to lead the exploration and documentation of their own natural heritage.

Our exploration projects span across Africa’s most remote and ecologically significant regions, including deserts, rainforests, mountains, plains, and lakes. We conduct both field research and scientific expeditions, using the latest technologies and methodologies to collect data on biodiversity, climate change, and land use. This research serves as the foundation for developing conservation strategies, sustainable development models, and policy recommendations that are tailored to the African context.

AGS is committed to fostering collaboration between researchers, governments, NGOs, and local communities to ensure that exploration leads to actionable solutions. We support expeditions that seek to document and map unknown territories, study ancient ecosystems, and explore cultural landscapes, contributing valuable insights into Africa’s natural and cultural heritage. Through this commitment to exploration, AGS works to highlight Africa’s unique environmental assets and create a deeper understanding of the continent’s role in global ecological and climate systems. Our research also plays a vital role in identifying potential risks, opportunities, and innovative solutions for safeguarding Africa’s ecosystems while supporting sustainable livelihoods for its people.

Furthermore, AGS seeks to make its findings accessible to a broader audience, sharing research outcomes through publications, workshops, and digital platforms. This open approach not only contributes to the global body of geographic knowledge but also ensures that local communities and policymakers can use the information to drive meaningful, long-term change.
