Conservation & Restoration

Rediscover Africa through the eyes of those who wander its vast and vibrant landscapes

Conservation and restoration are at the core of the African Geographic Society’s (AGS) efforts to safeguard the continent’s diverse ecosystems and natural resources. As Africa faces unprecedented environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation, desertification, and biodiversity loss, AGS is committed to developing and implementing strategies that protect and restore critical landscapes across the continent. Our conservation initiatives focus on the preservation of Africa’s iconic ecosystems—forests, rivers, deserts, mountains, and coastal regions—while also addressing the specific threats they face. We work to ensure the sustainability of Africa’s natural heritage for future generations, maintaining biodiversity and promoting the health of the ecosystems on which millions of people depend.

One of AGS’s core goals is to restore degraded landscapes and habitats. This includes reforestation programs in areas affected by deforestation, the rehabilitation of wetlands and rivers impacted by pollution or over-extraction, and the revitalization of grasslands and savannahs threatened by soil erosion and overgrazing. We use a combination of traditional knowledge and modern scientific practices to guide our restoration efforts, ensuring that solutions are culturally appropriate and scientifically effective. AGS works with local communities to restore these ecosystems, as they are often the primary stewards of the land and have invaluable knowledge about how to manage and protect natural resources sustainably.

In addition to habitat restoration, AGS focuses on biodiversity conservation. We prioritize the protection of endangered species and their habitats, addressing threats such as poaching, illegal trade, and loss of habitat due to agriculture or urbanization. Our efforts extend to developing protected areas, supporting wildlife corridors, and engaging in community-based conservation projects that allow local populations to become actively involved in protecting their natural surroundings. By creating sustainable livelihoods tied to conservation efforts—such as eco-tourism, sustainable agriculture, and forest management—AGS helps communities benefit economically from preserving their environment.

AGS also advocates for stronger policies and governance related to conservation. We work closely with governments, NGOs, and international organizations to push for effective conservation laws and the enforcement of environmental protections. Through public awareness campaigns, we aim to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of conservation and the urgent need to take action. By fostering collaboration, investing in long-term solutions, and integrating local knowledge, AGS is committed to reversing environmental degradation and ensuring the continued vitality of Africa’s ecosystems.
